Dan Henderson to challenge PRIDE Champion Wanderlei Silva in Las Vegas!

The main event for PRIDE Fighting Championships' second show in America has been announced. The event, PRIDE 33 "The Second Coming", will be held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 24th. Headlining the event will be a bout featuring PRIDE Middleweight Champion Wanderlei Silva defending his title against the "Real American Athlete," Dan Henderson!

Wanderlei Silva
(Champion/Brazil/Chute Boxe Academy)
Dan Henderson (Challenger/America/Team Quest)

Wanderlei Silva, the PRIDE Middleweight Champion, will meet the challenge of the pride of America and PRIDE Welterweight Grand Prix 2005 Champion, Dan Henderson, in his 5th title defense.

These two fighters first met in PRIDE 12, held on December 23, 2000 in Japan. This fight was Henderson's PRIDE debut, while Silva had already scored four consecutive wins in PRIDE, excluding his 5th bout against Gilbert Yvel that ended in a no-contest. Even so, Henderson carried the fight well, using his wrestling and striking skills to punish Silva in the early stages of the fight. However, Silva's knee kicks to Henderson in the four-points position, a technique not yet allowed at that time, slowed Henderson down and, in the end, Silva won by judges' decision.

Henderson has continuously requested a rematch with Silva since then but it was never realized. Now, however, Henderson's chance for revenge has arrived. Not only that, Henderson will likely have the hometown advantage as he fights in a title match in his homeland of America.

This will be a historical first match-up between two PRIDE Champions. Will Henderson be able to get his revenge and dominate two weight-classes at the same time? Or will Silva show America the reason he is called the "Absolute Champion" in Japan? There is no doubt that this fight will show everyone exactly what PRIDE is about.
