PRE-FIGHT INTERVIEW ANTONIO ROGERIO NOGUEIRA & ALSTAIR OVEREEM
06/30/2006

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira: This is my first fight in a long time but my conditioning is really good. I've been training in Brazil the entire time and I've been focusing on boxing over this past year. I've trained with Top Team members, of course, and professional boxers. I also train boxing with Murilo Bustamante and at Claudio's academy.

When I had time, I went to my hometown in Bahia and trained. I've fought in three boxing matches in Brazil and three boxing matches in Cuba, and I became the Brazilian Champion in November of last year. Competing in boxing in the Olympics is one of my goals. The Boxing Pan-Ams are scheduled to be held in Brazil next year so, of course, I want to compete. If I have a PRIDE fight though, I will decline the boxing match. I love mixed martial arts the most and I'm just doing boxing to improve my mixed martial arts skills. By the way, before fights, I go to Rodrigo's house and trade techniques with, at a minimum of, four sparring partners. It's a great experience.
This will be a rematch will Alistair and I'm confident since I have beaten him before. Alistair will probably study me and change the tactics that he used before, so I will have to be careful when I fight. I hesitated at the end of the 2nd round last time but that can't happen this time. I will challenge myself hard on the ground and although I think a striking battle with Alistair will be touch, I'm confident in my striking. This fight is a crucial fight in my career. If I can win this fight, I want to challenge the Middleweight Champion, Wanderlei Silva. I will definitely win that fight and take the Middleweight title.

Alistair Overeem: It's not at excuse but I had surgery on my nose before the fight with Werdum. The doctor told me that I couldn't train for one week to one month, so I wasn't completely prepared.
I went back to Holland after my lost to Werdum 2 months ago and have been training the entire time. I also won a decision victory over Vitor Belfort in an event called Strike Force in America on June 2nd. The time between my fights is short but because of that, I've been able to concentrate on my training. My conditioning has gone well, including cutting weight and improving my speed and movements. It's difficult to fight consecutive fights when you have an injury but I don't have to worry about that right now.
I've been training hard since I lost to Rogerio in February of last year. I want to show everyone how I have evolved. It will be different than my rematch with Vitor. To me, this rematch with Rogerio is a revenge match, so my motivation has been high since the moment the rematch was confirmed. I think Rogerio is a great fighter in all aspects, from striking on his feet to his ground techniques. What kind of weapons will I use against such a good fighter as Rogerio? You'll have to wait until the fight to see. What I can promise you is that the fight between Rogerio and me will surprise the fans.
