PRE-FIGHT INTERVIEW JOSH BARNETT & MARK HUNT
06/30/2006

Josh Barnett: After the Opening Round, I intended to relax at my house in Seattle for two weeks but I had a lot of other business and I wasn't able to relax very much. I've been training in Anaheim since the beginning of this year and just haven't been able to take any time to relax.

Josh Barnett: After the Opening Round, I intended to relax at my house in Seattle for two weeks but I had a lot of other business and I wasn't able to relax very much. I've been training in Anaheim since the beginning of this year and just haven't been able to take any time to relax.
I trained in the mountains this time. Recently, I've been training with Quinton ("Rampage" Jackson) because he also has a fight coming up. There wasn't any particular reason but there was a facility in the mountains for it, so I decided to try it. I did my usually training as well and the mountain training was just an effort to do my final preparations for this fight.
Training at high elevations improves your cardiovascular system and it increases your stamina. I think those results will show in this fight. This wasn't the most difficult training I've ever done but compared to running and ordinary training at sea level, training at 7,000 feet feels different and the air is thin. I could really feel the difference when I returned to sea level and sparred.
I focused on running in the mountains but I've never felt the need for running. So, I haven't really done any running before. Quinton apparently thought that I would be slow, so I wanted to race him and shut him up. When I open the refrigerator and take out some food, my girlfriend gets angry and chases me. I'm quick when I'm running away. (laughing)
I think the key point for this match will be who takes the initiative. I don't think this match with Hunt will be a difficult fight, though. Compared to Hunt, I clearly have more skills and more tricks up my sleeve. I've already got an image of the fight. Hunt may have a kickboxing base but I'm going to shut him down. I think it will be important to take the fight in a direction where it's difficult for him to fight.
Of course, I will be aiming for a ground fight but I can see KO'ing him with a suplex before that. If you drop 130kg on its head, you can knock it out. I'll be aiming for that, too. I can definitely throw Hunt with a German Suplex or a Back Drop because those are the most stable throws.
I gave TK (Tsuyoshi Kosaka) advice when he fought Hunt last time. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to do it but I will be fighting for TK this time. As a gift from me, I will give him this win.

Mark Hunt: I've trained well and my conditioning is very good. [Last time you said that you would have a six-pack the next time you came] That's going to take me about 2 more years. (laughing) My weight hasn't changed since the last time. It's about the same. I feel really good around 130kg and I want to fight as soon as possible.
Josh is a very good fighter. He's good enough to be in the Second Round of the Grand Prix. He has good wrestling skills so I will have to be careful of that when I fight because I'm sure he will try to take me down. I will be careful in my defense. I think my wrestling and jujitsu abilities have improved. Okay? Let me tell you what jujitsu is all about That's a joke. I will be going after a KO, as always.
I really wanted to fight Fedor in the Second Round but he was injured and couldn't fight, so it can't be helped. Josh is also a top fighter, and he's not lacking anything as an opponent. I'm not really worried about that kind of thing. I would like to fight Fedor later once his injury is healed, though.
Apparently, lots of things have been happening in Japan but that has nothing to do with the fighters. We are fighters, so we do what we have to do in the ring. It doesn't matter if it's on TV or not. We give exciting fights and make the fans happy. That's all.
I've always known that Josh would be a great opponent. His abilities are incredible. I didn't come all the way to Japan for a barbeque, though. This is war, of course! I will move forward and attack, like I did the last time. Josh will do the same so I think this fight will also be a tough battle. Once it's over, I will start focusing on the next round.
