PRE-FIGHT INTERVIEW WANDERLEI SILVA & KAZUYUKI FUJITA
06/30/2006

Wanderlei Silva: There's no particular reason for growing my hair out longer. A lot of girls mailed me saying that I would look handsome if I grew my hair out, and that's why I grew it out. That's a joke. (laughing) I've always shaved my head so I just wanted to see what it would look like if I grew it out. It was even longer before I came to Japan but my wife said it looked bad and cut it. (laughing) I may shave my head again before the fight.

The tattoo on my right arm? This is from the Bible. My last fight (against Arona) was a very important fight and when the fight was over, I was thankful to God that I had won. Recently, when I open the Bible, the pages with this written on it always appears. It's happened four or five times. So, I thought this message must be important for me and I had it tattooed.
Fighting in the Open Weight Grand Prix is a big challenge for me. I heard that there was nothing in the Grand Prix Opening Round for the fans to look forward to, that there wasn't even one Champion fighting. I received many messages from fans through he PRIDE official site and other sites, saying that a Champion has to fight in the Grand Prix. I received an offer at that time and decided to fight in the Grand Prix.
I think Fujita is one of the toughest fighters but I'm not really worried about his tackles. I've trained wrestling and jujitsu thoroughly and I can handle it, even if I am taken down. I want to find an opportunity to KO Fujita. I know it will be a difficult fight but I think Fujita will be tired in the 2nd half and that's when I want to win.
Fujita had problems with knee kicks against Thompson and I think one of my knee kicks will be enough. That's a joke, too. (laughing) Because Fujita is strong and tough. I've thought of many different scenarios and I think it's important to be able to win whether by punches or by knee kicks. I want to give a good fight and I want to win.
Since last year, Chute Boxe has had a professional Brazilian boxing coach with us. Everyone's boxing techniques on the team have improved because of that. So, I trained boxing hard this time and I will be ready to show it in the fight.
This fight with Fujita will live up to the fans' expectations. I will do my best, so please support me as always. PRIDE has been, and always will be, the best event in the world and I will continue to prove it.

Kazuyuki Fujita: I trained in America for a total of one month. My opponent was decided soon after I left so I was able to train specifically for him.
Silva is an aggressive attacker. He's got speed and power and my impression of him is different than the fighters I have fought before. More than anything, he's got a strong heart and he has a fighting spirit. Body size? That doesn't matter. In terms of body shape, he's not that different from me. My opponent isn't that big this time and I've cut a little weight, so I don't think our weights will be that far apart. My previous opponents were just too big. (laughing) Silva cuts weight to fight in the Middleweight Division and if he didn't cut weight, he'd really be a Heavyweight fighter, after all. I think Silva and I will be able to have a battle of spirits.
This time I focused on my conditioning and I've been able to cut a lot of fat. I change my training depending on the opponent, so my speed will be different this time. My coaches and training partners at Marco Ruas' dojo basically became Silva for my training. I'm ready to trade punches with him and if we go to the ground, I'm ready to fight there, too. I think that, in the end, this will be a battle of will power.
There have been many things happening but I believe in the ring that I'm in and I will just do my best. Everyone knows which ring is at the highest level, after all. Fighters just fight without thinking of things that go on outside the ring. It doesn't upset me at all. I believe Sakakibara and I chose this ring, so there's nothing for me to do but believe in it. This will be a war. If I'm going to war, I'm going to win.
I am really blessed with this opponent. I won't know for sure until we fight but I think this fight is going to feel great. I'm really looking forward to it and I think the fans are too. I will definitely win!
