THE WORLD'S FIRST PANCRATIUM TEAM
04/17/2006

On April 12th, Yamanashi Gakuin University wrestling team created the world's first Pancratium team. Pancratium is a wrestling competition where one competitor wins by forcing the other to submit to a choke or joint-lock.

Competitions consist of three, three-minute rounds. If movement stalls on the ground for one minute, both competitors are stood up and the match is restarted. If there is no submission during the three rounds, the winner will be determined by a judge's decision.

The Japan Wrestling Federation (JWF) petitioned the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA) last year to recognize Pancratium as a 4th wrestling style, after Freestyle, Greco Roman and Women's wrestling. The JWF's aim is to hold a World Championship in three years, with the ultimate goal of Pancratium becoming an official Olympic event in the future.

PRIDE General Director Nobuhiko Takada, PRIDE Rule Director Yuji Shimada and PRIDE fighter Daijiro Matsui were also present at the inauguration ceremony. This experimental club will also lead to the upbringing of future PRIDE fighters and Takada encourage the young competitors. Additionally, Matsui demonstrated techniques that Takada then explained to the audience.

Dream Stage Entertainment has provided training equipment such as uniforms, sandbags and PRIDE official gloves to the 11 team members. There are also plans to have current PRIDE fighters such as Yousuke Nishijima and Yoon Dong Sik to participate in the Yamanashi Gakuin University team's training and DSE will continue to support the team in every aspect.
