Rulon GardnerRulon Gardner is truly an American hero. This Greco-Roman wrestler is best known for one of the most dramatic victories in Olympic history---beating the unbeatable Russian, Aleksander Karelin, for the gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Leading up to the match, Karelin was a three-time gold medallist and riding a 13 year unbeaten streak. Gardner grew up on a dairy farm in Afton, Wyoming. It was there that he began wrestling with his brother, Reynolds, in order to see who would have fewer chores to perform. Gardner was awarded a scholarship to Ricks College in Idaho and later received a scholarship to the University of Nebraska where he earned a degree in physical education. Besides the victory in Sydney, Gardner has numerous wrestling titles to his credit including: three-time National champion (1995, 1997, 2001), a world championship (2001), and a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics. With his legend established in the wrestling world, Garner is now intent on showing the effectiveness of Greco-Roman wrestling in the world of mixed martial arts. SHOCKWAVE is his PRIDE debut. |
