Nobuhiko TakadaAs a child, Nobuhiko Takada's dream was to become a professional wrestler and follow in the footsteps of his idol, Antonio Inoki. Through hard work and natural athleticism, he was able to accomplish this and for much of the 1980's he was one of the top wrestlers in Japan under the New Japan and UWF promotions. His popularity in Japan grew immense, so much so, that he became a cultural icon akin to Hulk Hogan in the United States. After retiring from pro-wrestling, Takada opened up his own school, the Takada Dojo, which teaches professional wrestling and mixed martial arts (his students include Daijiro Matsui and Kazushi Sakuraba). Unsatisfied with retirement, Takada made his comeback in October 1997 as a mixed martial artist. In one of the biggest matches in the history of the sport, Takada took on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and vale tudo legend, Rickson Gracie. Though Takada lost the match, he became one of PRIDE FC's most popular stars in Japan. Relying on his pro wrestling techniques, athleticism, and grace, Takada's success in the ring was mixed, though one of the most impressive victories of his career was against legendary MMA star, Mark "The Hammer" Coleman. |
